How We Built a QR Menu System for Khukuri Restaurant & Bar

Running a restaurant means dealing with constant change. Prices change, new dishes are added, seasonal items come and go, and printed menus become outdated faster than most owners expect.

Khukuri Restaurant & Bar faced the same challenge.

The restaurant needed a simple way for customers to browse the menu directly from their phones while giving staff the flexibility to update menu information without reprinting physical menus.

Instead of creating another PDF-based menu, we built a dedicated QR-accessible digital menu experience optimized for mobile devices.

The Challenge

The existing approach created several operational problems:

  • Menu updates required reprinting.
  • Customers had to rely on physical menus.
  • Mobile usability was poor.
  • The restaurant lacked a modern digital experience.
  • Menu information could become outdated across different channels.

Most digital menus fail because they’re simply PDFs uploaded to a website. They technically work, but they aren’t designed for how people actually browse menus on smartphones.

Our goal was to create something faster, cleaner, and easier to use.

Planning the Experience

Before writing any code, we focused on one question:

How do customers actually use a restaurant menu?

Most visitors:

  • Scan a QR code while seated.
  • Browse quickly.
  • Jump between categories.
  • Compare prices.
  • Make decisions within a few minutes.

This meant the menu needed to prioritize speed and clarity above everything else.

What We Built

The solution was a dedicated QR menu platform designed specifically for mobile users.

Key features included:

Mobile-First Design

The entire experience was designed for phones first.

We used:

  • Large readable typography
  • Clear category navigation
  • Fast scrolling performance
  • Simple layout hierarchy

This eliminated the frustration commonly found in PDF menus.

Organized Menu Structure

Items were grouped into logical sections, making navigation significantly easier.

Examples included:

  • Starters
  • Main Courses
  • Momo Varieties
  • Beverages
  • Specials

Customers could immediately find what they were looking for without excessive scrolling.

Fast Loading Performance

Restaurant customers won’t wait for a slow website.

We optimized:

  • Images
  • Asset delivery
  • Mobile rendering
  • Page performance

The result was a lightweight experience that loads quickly even on average mobile connections.

QR Accessibility

The system was designed around QR-based access.

Customers simply scan the code and immediately reach the menu without downloading an application or creating an account.

Reducing friction was a major priority throughout development.

Technology Stack

The project was built using:

  • Next.js
  • React
  • Tailwind CSS
  • Vercel

This stack allowed us to create a responsive experience while maintaining excellent performance.

Why We Didn’t Use a PDF

Many restaurants assume a PDF menu is sufficient.

In practice, PDFs create several issues:

  • Difficult navigation
  • Poor mobile readability
  • Slow loading times
  • Limited flexibility

A dedicated web experience provides a significantly better user experience while making updates easier for the business.

Lessons Learned

Every project reveals patterns that can be applied elsewhere.

Three lessons stood out:

Simplicity Wins

Customers don’t want complexity.

Clear layouts consistently outperform feature-heavy interfaces.

Mobile Matters Most

The vast majority of users access QR menus from smartphones.

Design decisions should reflect that reality.

Speed Directly Affects Experience

A customer deciding what to order should never be waiting for a menu to load.

Performance is part of the product.

The Result

The final system gives Khukuri Restaurant & Bar:

  • A modern digital menu experience
  • Easier menu management
  • Better mobile usability
  • Consistent branding
  • A platform that can evolve in the future

Most importantly, customers can access the menu instantly with a simple QR scan.

Final Thoughts

A QR menu should do more than replace paper.

When designed correctly, it becomes part of the restaurant’s customer experience.

For Khukuri Restaurant & Bar, the goal wasn’t to digitize a menu. The goal was to make browsing food easier, faster, and more enjoyable for guests.

That’s ultimately what good software should do.
